Protected Assets: What You Won't Lose

A common misconception is that you must give up your home to qualify for Medicaid. In reality, many of your most important assets are excluded from the calculation.

Primary Residence

Your home is not counted toward the asset limit as long as you intend to return or a spouse resides there.

Household Furnishings

Furniture, appliances, and other household goods are fully excluded from asset calculations.

Personal Belongings

Clothing, jewelry of reasonable value, and other personal effects are protected.

Certain Life Insurance

Term life insurance and policies with face value under $1,500 are generally excluded.

You do not need to lose your home to qualify.

Family Love Care helps families understand what counts toward the asset limit and what is protected. Many families qualify even when they believe they won't.

Functional Eligibility: Nursing Home Level of Care

Beyond income, participants must demonstrate a nursing home level of care through an in-home nurse assessment by the Maryland Department of Health.

Assessment Requirement

Significant Assistance with at Least 2 ADLs

A nurse from MDH evaluates the participant's ability to perform daily activities. If the individual meets the nursing facility level of care, they can receive services at home through the CFC program instead of in a nursing home.
